It will explain the typical issues that are highlighted during the peer-review process and discuss what reviewers are typically looking for in submissions. Drawing on experiences from the KTH course Environmental Psychology and Behavior Analysis (LD1002), which has enrolled more than 1000 students over the past two years. We demonstrate how large-scale online education can remain human-centered, interactive, and impactful.\u003C/p>","\u003Cp>The session addresses a central challenge in higher education: how can we move beyond knowledge transmission toward designing courses that prepare students to act as agents of sustainable innovation? Cognitive psychology research shows that many students rely on ineffective study habits such as rereading or highlighting, which contribute little to long-term retention. In contrast, strategies like retrieval practice, self-explanation, and metacognitive reflection have been shown to enhance durable learning and improve knowledge transfer to new contexts (Dunlosky et al., 2013; Biwer et al., 2020; Stanton et al., 2021). Embedding these approaches in digital course design provides students with structured opportunities for deeper reflection and feedback, even in online settings.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>However, knowledge alone is rarely enough to bring about behavior change. Research from behavioral economics highlights that nudging strategies including feedback, choice architecture, and commitment devices can reduce barriers and create conditions for learners to take meaningful action (Thaler &amp; Sunstein, 2008; Costanzo et al., 1986). In LD1002, students combines these behavioral tools with in real-world cases such as reducing household energy consumption and promoting sustainable mobility. These assignments fostered not only technical competence but also civic engagement and responsibility.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>The workshop will combine short presentations with highly interactive activities. Participants will work in groups to design a case assignment, develop an accompanying rubric, and document their design process through photos and collaborative reflection. This practical exercise, grounded in authentic sustainability challenges, illustrates how digital transformation can enable scalability while keeping education human-centered.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>By Approaches and Challenges to Using Student Data with AI","\u003Cp>With the widespread growth and adoption of AI tools in society there has been a natural crossover into education, and such tools can present a great opportunity to make more efficient and effective decisions including the mining and use of the large quantities of data educational institutions hold.\u003C/p>","\u003Cp>For example, one area of focus is that of data driven pastoral intervention which has been increasingly adopted, especially during the COVID and post-COVID period. This is mainly due to the common adoption of online Learning Management Systems (LMS) across various educational institutions. With the advancement of AI, researchers are increasingly incorporating Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance the overall student experience and performance. There are tools and software systems proposed by various researchers that feed the LLMs and ML models with student and staff data retrieved from the online LMSs.&nbsp;\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>However significant challenges and barriers remain to making effective ethical use of such tools. The key challenges are: (i) university and government specific ethical concerns and regulations in accessing student records, and (ii) ethical concerns in feeding student data into LLM models for enhancing student experience and academic performance especially around informed consent.&nbsp;\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>In this timely workshop, we will identify these challenges, discuss them, gather insight from the participants and highlight best practice through case studies, ultimately delivering a takeaway set of methods and workflow which can be used to successfully use such tools.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>As a hands-on example, we will demonstrate our Student Academic Performance Predictor (SAPP) tool which uses key student performance metrics (e.g. online page views, lab attendance, class attendance, etc.) and explores major ML models to detect student performance issues and timely guide them to improve the overall academic results. Participants will be able to gain hands on experience with the tool, see the potential power and also hear about the challenges faced and how best practice has been applied to allow the real-world implementation and deployment of SAPP. This will then act as a springboard to discuss wider adoption of tools and how this can be achieved.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>The workshop will motivate and empower the academic researchers to propose data and AI driven solutions for educational sectors while being aware of the ethical challenges and how to safely trial and implement such tools based on existing best practice. We will present key principles of remote lab design and implementation, then demonstrate RHLab's solutions-including experiments with digital twins of real-world equipment and fictional scenarios-to illustrate practical applications. The session will also spotlight the potential of remote labs to empower institutions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where resource disparities can limit access to sophisticated laboratory experiences.\u003C/p>","\u003Cp>Remote laboratories allow students to access real hardware and conduct authentic experiments from anywhere with an internet connection. Unlike pure simulations, remote labs preserve the hands-on experience critical for engineering practice while reducing barriers related to cost, location, and infrastructure. Over the past decade, remote labs have proven particularly effective for reaching underrepresented and geographically dispersed learners.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>RHLab at the University of Washington has pioneered several remote lab platforms-including FPGA- and microcontroller-based experiments-used by students in multiple countries. These platforms support flexible scheduling, lower equipment costs through hardware sharing, and allow institutions to collaborate across borders. Our remote laboratories have also been upgraded to include digital twins of real-world devices and fictional scenarios that are typically unavailable in traditional laboratories, allowing students' laboratory experience to be more engaging and helping them to see the real-world application of their designs.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>In the MENA region, where some universities face challenges in acquiring or maintaining advanced laboratory equipment, remote labs can serve as a cost-effective solution to provide high-quality, hands-on education. By sharing devices across institutions, students can gain experience with technologies that might otherwise be inaccessible, strengthening both local capacity and global engineering networks.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>This workshop will provide an overview of remote lab frameworks, a live demonstration of RHLab technologies, and a discussion of strategies for integrating remote labs into courses. Participants will leave with practical knowledge, open-source resources, and implementation ideas tailored for diverse contexts-including emerging economies and regions with limited access to advanced hardware.
